North Chennai is set to get more hospital beds, new houses, smart classrooms and other infrastructure facilities. As part of the 1,000 crore Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam announced in the Budget last year, govt has announced projects including construction of new tenements on Water Basin Road through Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) at an estimated 75 crore.
A super-speciality block in Children’s Hospital,Egmore at 53 crore, two new blocks in RSRM hospital, Royapuram at 96 crore and three new floors at Government Peripheral Hospital in Periyar Nagar at a cost of 55 crore have been announced.
To cater to the education needs of people in the region, a new ITI will be set up at 11 crore and modernization and computerization of 10 schools taken up at 45 crore. The Retteri, Villivakkam and Padi lakes will be restored at a cost of 30 crore.
Residents in the area, however, want more. “Roadsin North Chennai should be widened in proportion with the development and basic infrastructure should improve accordingly,” said C Raghukumar, convener, Perambur Neighborhood DevelopmentForum.
To address such demands, govt announced a project worth 946 crore to enhance the water and sewerage system capacity. “Tondiarpet, Royapuram and Thiru vi ka Nagar zones had multiple complaints of sew overflow.
There were also issues with polluted water supply. We will replace the old sewers with new ones, and install new sewage pumping stations,” said Metrowater managing director T G Vinay.Underground sewerage work in north Chennai will be taken up as per the suggestions of the consultant studying the core city’s sewage infrastructure.
“Old water supply main pipelines are also choked in some areas. One underground water tank is proposed to cater to residents at the tailend,” said Vinay, adding that the project’s draft proposal is almost ready.
