CHENNAI: A largescale infrastructure revamp is set to begin in North Chennai under the Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam (VCVT), with 157 km of water pipelines and 120 km of sewer pipelines scheduled for replacement. The project, costing 946.42 crore, aims to modernise aging pipelines across key city areas. Of this, 231.25 crore is allocated for water supply improvements, while 715.18 crore will be spent on sewer network upgrades.
Key works of this project also include laying a 1,000mm CI pumping main from Elaya Street to Kodungaiyur STP, strengthening pipelines in Tondiarpet and Kolathur, and upgrading sewer mains in Depot 60 and 64. A new roadside sewage pumping station at Broadway Road is also planned. These efforts aim to improve sewage collection, reduce overflows, and enhance sanitation in North Chennai.
The existing pipelines, which are over 30 years old, led to frequent water supply disruptions, pollution, sewer overflows, and pipeline bursts. The project will tackle choked water mains, low-pressure issues, defective supply lines, collapsed manholes, and sewer obstructions.
The work has been divided into six packages—two for water pipelines and four for sewer systems. Work orders were issued for Water Package II and Sewer Package IV. Officials said preliminary surveys already commenced in these areas.
